The Disappearance of Our Forests by Allison McElroy
On exhibit now until February 22 at the Gadsden Museum of Art
Reception Friday February 1, 5 – 7pm
In the forest there are no headlines, no breaking news alerts,
no cell phones and no internet service.
In the forest we are surrounded by beauty, the smell of pines, sounds of birds in
the trees.
As we walk;
we walk on an empire of insects that tend the forest floor.
Sadly our forest are disappearing at an alarming rate.
My installation is to bring awareness to this loss and how it will effect daily life as well as
life for our future generations. The art that hangs on the wall stands as a signifier, a
visual image of my personal grief to see us deprived of something of such great value.
Last August, Professor Allison McElroy spent 10 days in an immersive art program in the Amazon rainforest. Chosen as one of 18 artists interested in nature to participate in the LabVerde art program. McElroy was able to explore the diverse and beautiful areas of the Amazon. Her art installation currently exhibited at the Gadsden Museum of Art represents the deforestation of our world, and brings awareness to the need for change in our society in regards to how we care for the nature around us.
Please check out the wonderful images below taken on her trip.
